I've been using Verbatim BD-R LTH (low-to-high) single-layer 6x disks only, and they've worked great. Took me about 40 minutes to write or read a full BD-R. Overall Review: I've only had this drive for about a week, but it's been all positive.
PowerDVD not as smooth as Media Player in some cases seems to designed for direct DVD/BD playback and 3D capabilities.

CyberLink software is about 2 years old (e.g., 3D-Advisor virtually useless because it doesn't understand current crop of hardware) Samsung should provide downloadable updates of these for free with registration. May require both USB plugs to be plugged-in on low-power USB ports typical of some laptops. "Green" friendly: low-power consumption and lead-free design.Ĭons: Short 18" USB cable. Claims AV capability to be used when directly connected to USB media plug of a suitably equipped TV/monitor (not tested). Includes CyberLink Blu-Ray Disc Suite (3D-Advisor, InstantBurn, MediaShow 5.1, Power2Go 6.1, PowerBackup 2, PowerDVD 9, PowerProducer 5.5, PowerStarter 7.0_DB). Does not need external power via 120v power brick. While it has a dual USB connection, only the primary connection was needed when running to my HP Pavilion Slimline desktop (YMMV). Pros: Compact, quiet and reasonably quick over USB 2.0 (about 15 Mb/sec). So 4 stars only because Samsung bundled very outdated software with their newly released Blu-ray The CyberLink website even states "Any Blu-ray Disc titles released after 2011 June may not be compatible with CyberLink PowerDVD 9." Basically you have to use the vastly outdated software for it to work - v9 was released in March 2009. However the bundled PowerDVD 9 works fine. I finally found an asterisk in their help file with a footnote that not all versions of PowerDVD 10 support BD playback.

Turns out the PowerDVD 10 upgrade does not have Blu-ray support. PowerDVD 10 reported "There is a a disc with an unsupported format in drive X:".
The Samsung laptop came with CyberLink MediaSuite with a free download upgrade to PowerDVD 10. The Samsung blu-ray burner comes with CyberLink PowerDVD 9. I bought it along with a Samsung Series 7 laptop. Overall Review: Initially I thought the unit I received was defective - it would not play Blu-ray discs. TrueTheater 3D helps convert regular DVD movies into a 3D experience while CyberLink BD&3D Advisor will test that your PC is ready to play Blu-ray Disc and Blu-ray 3D content. You can enjoy 3D from your DVD collection today.Ĭons: bundled CyberLink software is outdated by 2 major versions Broad 3D support: PowerDVD delivers Blu-ray 3D to any compatible 3D displays and supports all 3D video file formats. PowerDVD with support for Blu-ray 3D delivers this in an all new viewing experience. With vivid new dimensions in picture depth and crystal-clear images that leap out of your screen, you will be fully immersed in the movies.
